IMAGE COPYRIGHT

Protect your photos before someone else uses them

Almost every post about a man starts with his photograph — screenshotted from a dating profile, cropped, and posted somewhere he can’t see it.

If that photo is registered to you, you have a route to getting it taken down that platforms are legally required to act on, and one that works far better than arguing about what the post says.

This service registers your photographs with the US Copyright Office so that route is open to you before you need it.

WHY COPYRIGHT RATHER THAN REPORTING THE POST

(©01)

Reporting a post as unfair or untrue puts it in a moderation queue, where it is usually judged not to break any rules. A copyright notice goes somewhere else entirely — platforms have legal obligations around copyright and dedicated teams handling it.

You own the copyright in your own photographs from the moment you take them. Registration doesn’t create that ownership; it proves it, and it gives the claim real weight if anyone pushes back.

WHICH PHOTOS CAN BE REGISTERED

(©02)

You own the copyright in a photo if you took it. Selfies are straightforward.

If somebody else took the photo — a friend, or a photographer — they own it, not you. That surprises most people. Registering a photo you don’t own is worse than not registering at all, because it hands the other side something to attack.

Where a photo isn’t a selfie, we sort out a short written assignment from whoever took it first. It takes a few minutes and it means what we file actually holds up. Most services skip this step. We don’t.

TWO HONEST NOTES

(©04)

This is a public record. Copyright registrations are searchable, and yours will show your name as the owner. If you’d rather that wasn’t the case, talk to us first — there are options, and they involve trade-offs worth understanding before you file.

Registration takes months, not days. The Copyright Office is slow. Your protection dates from the day we file, not the day the certificate arrives — but if you’re looking for something that helps this week, this isn’t it. Start a check instead.
