What Is the Tea App, and How Does It Actually Work?

What is the Tea app

Tea is a women-only app where users post about men they’ve dated, matched with or been approached by. A post usually includes the man’s first name, age and city, a photo (often screenshotted from his own dating profile) and an account of someone’s experience with him. Other members can mark a man with a red or green flag, comment, and search for men by name, phone number or city.

If you’ve heard about Tea and wondered whether you might be on it, the short answer is that you can’t find out on your own. This guide covers how the app works, what actually gets posted, why men can’t see it, and what your options are.

Who can use Tea

Tea is built for women only. New users verify themselves with a selfie during sign-up, and that verification step is the whole point of the app. It’s what lets members trust that the person posting is a woman, and it’s what keeps men out.

That makes Tea very different from a public forum or a subreddit, where anyone can create an account and read along. There is no public version of Tea, no web page you can browse, and no guest access. The app was designed so that the men being discussed can’t see what’s said about them.

How the Tea app works

Most of what happens on Tea falls into three parts.

Posts about men

A member creates a post about a specific man, usually with his first name, age and a photo, and describes her experience or asks whether anyone knows him. Other members reply in the comments. Some posts are a single line. Others turn into long threads.

Red flags and green flags

Members can tag a man with a red flag (a warning) or a green flag (a recommendation). Those flags are often the first thing another woman sees when she looks him up.

Search and lookup tools

Members can search for a man by name, phone number or city. Tea also offers lookup tools, including reverse image search and background-style checks, some of them behind a paid tier. The aim is to let a woman check whether a match is who he says he is before she meets him.

Tea also blocks screenshots inside the app, which makes it harder for content to leave the platform, though screenshots of posts still circulate elsewhere.

What actually gets posted

Posts vary a lot. Some are a photo and a short comment. Others are a detailed account of a date, a list of concerns, or a question to other members. Because everything is written by users, accuracy varies too. Some posts are specific and first-hand. Others are vague, second-hand or based on one interaction. Tea relies on its own moderation and reporting tools rather than checking each post before it goes up.

The photo is usually what makes a post findable. Most men use a first name only on dating apps, and common names return a lot of results. A photo lifted from a dating profile is what ties a post to a specific person.

Why you can’t check it yourself

There is no public directory, no outside search tool and no way to create an account without passing the women-only verification. Asking a female friend to log in and look for you puts her account at risk under the app’s rules, and she would only see what her own account can see.

We cover the workarounds people try, and why they tend to backfire, in Can men see the Tea app?

This is the gap most men run into. Women have a way to look a man up before meeting him. Men have had no matching way to find out whether they’ve been posted about. For a lot of men the uncomfortable part isn’t what might be posted. It’s not knowing.

Find out if you’re on Tea

The 2025 data breach

In July 2025, Tea confirmed a data breach. Images uploaded by tens of thousands of early users, including verification selfies and IDs, were exposed and shared online. Later in 2025, Apple removed Tea, and a separate men’s app called TeaOnHer, from its App Store, citing concerns about content moderation and user privacy. Both apps remained available on Android at the time.

Some sites now claim they can search the leaked data. We don’t use it, in any form. That data was obtained unlawfully, and circulating it harms the people in it, most of whom have nothing to do with anyone searching. Every check we run is a search of the live platform. You can read exactly how we source data.

How to find out if you’re on Tea

A Tea Check is a direct search of the Tea app for posts about you, run by a person rather than a bot. You send two to five clear photos (ideally the ones you use on dating apps, since those are the ones that get screenshotted) plus your first name, age and city. We search the app and send you a written report, usually within two hours during business hours.

If we find something, the report shows what was posted, when, and which city it appeared under, with screenshots. It never says who posted it. If we find nothing, you get that in writing too, along with exactly where we looked. You can see what both versions look like in our sample report.

Screenshots also move between platforms. A post that starts on Tea can end up in a Facebook group, and the other way round. If you want the wider picture, the Full Check covers Tea, the “Are We Dating The Same Guy” groups and app, and anywhere else your photos have turned up online, in one report.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tea app only for women?

Yes. Every user verifies with a selfie at sign-up, and the app is closed to men.

Can I search the Tea app for my own name?

Not yourself. Search is only available to verified members inside the app. A Tea Check searches it for you and sends a written report.

Does Tea tell you if someone posts about you?

No. Men aren’t users, so there is no notification. Most men only find out second-hand, if at all.

Is everything on Tea accurate?

Not necessarily. Posts are written by users and aren’t checked before they go up. Some are detailed and first-hand. Others are vague or second-hand.

Do you use the leaked Tea data?

No. We only search the live platform, and we never use leaked, hacked or breached data.

The bottom line

Tea is built so that men can’t check it, and rumors about who’s on it are often wrong in one direction or the other. If it’s on your mind, a direct search gets you a real answer in writing, usually within a couple of hours.
